Rattan Production
The Rattan we source grows naturally, almost like a weed, in the forests of Indonesia. Growing naturally without interrupting the present structure and balance of the rainforest, Rattan is the fastest developing tropical wood and an exceptionally sustainable material, renewing in only 5-7 years.
Harvesting is done by hand causing minimum impact to forest structures and with the importance of trees to growing rattan, it encourages forest retention as the trees are needed to support the growth of the rattan. Local farmers harvesting the rattan also re-plant tip of the vine at the base of its tree ready to repeat the process again and again.
Kuranda Rattan Range
Unlike some materials which create a lot of waste from their unusable elements, you can use every bit of rattan in the furniture-making process. All of its exterior and interior parts are pliable and can be shaped as desired. A further benefit of rattan is that it doesn’t require heavy lacquers or staining, many of these finishing products contain chemicals which can cause significant negative effects for people and the environment.
